How to Decide If Blogger Hosting Is Right for You

Blogger hosting is a free service provided by google. It can be difficult to know whether you want to go with a free host or if you are ready to take the plunge & start out on your own domain.

It's important to decide which blogging platform you want to use because it can be a hassle to switch over. If you change from a yourblog.blogspot.com domain to just a yourblog.com domain you can lose your page ranking & you'll basically have to start all over in the search engines.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
1

Decide if it's for fun or business. Most pro bloggers have their own domain name & consider .blogspot bloggers to be less serious people, or even spammers. However, if you don't want to monetize your blog & you are just trying to keep a journal, a free host ensures that you will be able to keep blogging even if you have to cut your budget. Plus, it's an easy way to know if you even like blogging before you invest any money into it.

2

Blogger has outages every once in awhile. These can be scheduled maintenance or an unsuspected surprise. At the very least, you wouldn't be able to post to your blog for several hours.

3

Look at how many blogs you want to have. There are several blog hosts that allow you to host multiple domain names on one account. However, you have to purchase each domain name separately. It's $20+ a year per domain name if you want to have some sort of privacy protection.

4

Consider the software. Blogger has been catching up with the wordpress software. Now you can even set your post to be scheduled to appear at a future date. However, blogger is still lacking in some areas. You can't easily backup your blog posts. You can set your entire blog to be password protected. However, you can't make individual posts private if there are just certain things that you want to keep in your inner circle.

5

Check out the templates. If you are just starting out you probably have a pretty good idea of how you want your blog to look. There are just a few basic blogger templates that are used by millions of blogs. You can find free templates at a third party site but you will probably have to know html to edit them. Also, whenever you change your blog all of your widgets will be deleted. This means that you will probably have to reenter every single site in your blog roll.

6

Ease of use. Blogger caters to the beginner & it is easy to add widgets. You can rearrange your sidebar, add a blog picture, & even change the colors of your text without knowing html.

7

Every blogger blog that uses google hosting (a .blogspot) domain name is required to show the toolbar at the top. This bar has some features such as a search box.

However, it also has a flag button that people can use to mark your blog as spam. It doesn't matter if it's just by accident or someone was having a bad day & is going through lots of blogs & flagging them. If you have a template that doesn't include the toolbar you will be in violation of the TOS.
